| Just wanted to post a review here of a sailing charter we took to BVI for a week. It was on the Sublime, a 72' ketch that was in good shape and well equipped. The captain, Brian Johnson, was younger than most as he is in his early 30's but proved capable in handling the boat. His wife Stephanie is an amazing chef and nearly all our meals were memorable. The first mate was very friendly and helpful in all our activities. They offer both scuba and snorkeling, plus some water toys which worked out well for us. I wish I could say it was a great trip, but unfortunately Brian's personality did not fit with us and that cast a shadow over the whole trip. His wife was great, but Brian just does not seem to be a natural people person despite his strenuous efforts to be entertaining. He ended up being very offensive on several occasions as he insulted his previous charter guests and described in detail how he "hates New Yorkers". (We're not NYers BTW). He always seemed to take an innocent question the wrong way and be very defensive about anything regarding the boat or the itinerary. It became obvious to us after the second day that he has an underlying temper and arrogance that he is trying to keep under control. Our other problem was that while we wanted a younger crew, his sense of humor was very juvenile with lots of practical jokes on us. I can take a good practical joke as well as anyone, but he really seemed to get a lot of pleasure out of repeatedly making his guests the brunt of his jokes. We also "overhead" a few insulting comments that were made just loud enough for us to hear. I guess the lesson here is that if you are in your 50's like us, then you will probably want a more mature and friendly captain. |
