Cab tour from Cayo Santa Maria to ????

I've gone through some of the old threads on excursions to Santa Clara, Remedios, etc. and would like some opinions from the 'experts'.

Group of 4 +/- at Melia CSM in mid-Jan and we will probably have a few days of non-beach weather. I'm not into the guided tour buses and have done private cabs in the past that were fantastic but not from CSM. I would obviously have to find a taxi & driver a day or two in advance but I'd appreciate some help.

To give our traveling friends some true Cuban experiences for a one day trip, would you recommend Remedios, Santa Clara, maybe even Trinidad or where? Is it worth the extra drive farther south? Ideally, lunch at a local home/restaurant, cigar factory, local bar or two, etc. Not interested in any beach, already have one of the best at CSM. Just sitting at a bar for a few hours absorbing the view and local life is often enough to make me happy. That's not something you get at most AI's.

Suggestions as to where to go, what I should expect to pay the driver, even the best way to find a driver would all be appreciated. I usually can get info from the resort staff but I'd like to have some help with suggestions prior to leaving.

I could rent a car but for approx the same cost but I'd rather have the expertise of a local behind the wheel and it's just a whole lot more fun and educational.
