I'm planning a trip for my mother and I that would be for 5-7 days in early January. She is 74 but moderately active. Where should we go? Here's the criteria:

* beautiful beaches
* reasonable chance of good weather
* island culture and/or historical points of interest
* would like to avoid a painfully long flight if I can help it, although I'm resigned to the fact that anywhere in the Caribbean will not be a short flight for us since we live in L.A.

We have been to Puerto Rico, St. Martin, St. Bart's and Cancun, and would prefer to try someplace new.

Please help, and thanks!

You can fly non-stop LA to Jamaica. In Ocho Rios, there is Jamaica Inn, a charming, family-owned-for-50+ years small hotel, Jamaica Inn. No place gets better reviews from travelers. Private beach.
Also, you can fly nonstop to Miami, then nonstop to Barbados, an interesting and varied island. Lovely people, great sightseeing, including plantation houses, gardens, cave, history. You'll need maximum time there.

As already noted, Air Jamaica is a non-stop option from LAX, otherwise you'll be connecting over (most likely) MIA or DFW.

Distance wise, the closest islands to the West Coast are Cayman and Jamaica... to take two Eastern Caribbean Islands you noted (Grenada and Barbados), you are adding at least 2-3 hours travel time.

You should consider Anguilla. It is like T & C but the water will be warmer. It has some of the whitest sand and bluest water of all the islands. Also, you could take turns babysitting and do a day trip via ferry to either St. Martin or St. Barts. We stayed at Ku` and loved it. If you get a beach front unit, you are just a few steps from the waters edge!

If you still wonder which island will be good for a caribbean vacation you can take a look at the top caribbean islands and make your choice.

I would prefer Saba as the most preserved island.

Have a nice trip to everybody that will go there soon!

you should go and have fun... as you've said she's moderately active so i don't think there will be problem in traveling as long as she would have a good rest at the end of the day. She will definitely enjoy the scenery and beauty of nature. Wink

For me better got to a historical places...I vote for "island culture and/or historical points of interest"...most of oldies love historical places and I guess your mother will enjoy it...But it is better to consult your mother first where she wants to go...It is good that she likes where to go and its her own choice...^_^

Punta Cana is the place to be. For this time of year the weather is excellent, nearly around 80 degrees, lovely clear skies, low humidity, and very well priced hotels.

Jamaica is the best choice for this time of the year if you really want to get the impressions of the beautiful beaches and high temperature and a lot of entertainments there. If you want to eat the very delicious and tasty food then it is time to visit Jamaica!

Anguilla is also a great destination for beach vacation. It is somewhat less crowded and enjoys good weather. It has many spectacular beaches with fine sand and crystal clear water.
