Crop Over, a five-week summer festival, is Barbados' most popular and colourful festival. It's origins can be traced back to the 1780's, a time when Barbados was the world's largest producer of sugar. At the end of the sugar season, there was always a huge celebration to mark the culmination of another successful sugar cane harvest - the Crop Over celebration.

The Crop over Festival is traditionally celebrated for the last sugar cane harvest and delivery for the season in Barbados.

The festival has now evolved into a series of activities involving both entertainment and heritage events. It includes the heritage fairs, Heritage Gala, traditional food, art and craft, games and music and many other entertainment activities.

Barbados' main product is sugar. Sugarcane plantations can be found all over the island dating back as early as 1700s. The origins of the festival can be traced back as far as 1780 when the island became the largest producer of sugar in the world. The festival is celebrated at the end of the harvest season to give thanks for the successful harvest.
