Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary (also known as the Thekkady Wildlife Sanctuary) is one of the premium wildlife sanctuaries in India and perhaps the finest in south India. Situated in the picturesque environs of the Western Ghats hills in Kerala, the Periyar national park covers an area of approximately 777 sq km. The varied physical features, such as landscape and climate, of this jungle hold up a rich and varied flora and fauna. The topography of the park is highly undulating and boasts numerous narrow water streams.

Kerala tourism websites also guide you how to reach Periyar. Kochi (Cochin) at 200-kms or Madurai in Tamil Nadu at140-kms are nearest airports from Periyar. Kottayam at 114-kms is the nearest railhead from Periyar. Kumily, the nearest town from Periyar is well served by both state and private buses from Kottayam, Ernakulam and Madurai in Tamil Nadu.

After heavy rains, chances of good wildlife sightings are very slim as the animals only come to the lake, when water sources inside the forest have dried up.

So visit this magnificent wildlife sanctuary. Indian Holiday.com offers detailed information on how to reach Periyar National Park as well as other Indian Wildlife Sanctuaries. For more information please fill up the form below.

Hi all Smile
I want to share some experience of Ireland's wildlife, In Ireland rivers and lakes contain a wide variety of fish. Salmon, trout, char and eel all occur naturally and other varieties, such as pike, roach and rainbow trout, have been introduced to the waters.
There are no snakes; the only reptile is the lizard. 380 species of wild birds are recorded in Ireland, 135 breeds in the country.
Three-quarters of the world population of the Greenland white fronted goose winter in Ireland, which has been marked by the establishment of an internationally important wildlife reserve in Co. Wexford.

Hi, is it costly to go and stay in Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary? Is one day enough to explore all parts? Thanks for the information.

Some of the packages include the viewing of tribal dances and their culture. The tribes, which have been living since ages outside these forests possess a lot of local knowledge. This includes the knowledge about the unique medicinal value of the jungle plants. You can enrich yourself with their age-old wisdom in case you want to. One more thing here. Take a good pair of boots with yourself to withstand the rough terrain of the jungle and also the mosquito repellents. At night, these will protect you from the insect bites and the infection, which you might acquire form them.
